Start with the office that issued or preserves the Washington County marriage record

County copy route

The Washington County Clerk publishes an in-person and mail route for certified copies of marriage licenses held by the county.

County historical records

The Clerk’s Records page says courthouse records reach back to the county’s early recordkeeping period and that marriage indexes/images are among records available through its records systems, subject to the source’s stated coverage.

State certificate route

The Kentucky Office of Vital Statistics maintains marriage certificates from June 1958 forward. Earlier marriage-certificate inquiries are directed to the county clerk where the license was issued.

For a county certified copy, send the identifying facts the clerk asks for

  1. 01
    Choose mail or in-person

The Clerk’s marriage-license page provides both routes.

  2. 02
Give the parties’ names in the requested format

For older records the county page requests the bride’s maiden name and groom’s name; for more recent records it asks for partner names in the current format.

  3. 03
    Give the marriage year

The county request instructions ask for the marriage date/year information needed to locate the license.

  4. 04
    Request a certified copy explicitly

If certification matters for the receiving agency, say so rather than ordering an unspecified photocopy or relying on an online index image.

  5. 05
Keep the issuing county in your note

A Washington County request only works if Washington County issued the Kentucky marriage license.

An index hit and a certified marriage certificate serve different purposes

Item Useful for Not a substitute for
Online/courthouse index Locating a likely marriage entry and narrowing names/date A certified copy when an agency requires official proof
County certified license copy Proof from the county that issued/holds the license record A statewide search of every Kentucky county
OVS certified certificate State vital-record certificate for events within OVS coverage Genealogical verification without an application; OVS says it does not verify a record without the required request process
Unverified third-party listing Possible lead only Official county or state evidence

Use the event date to choose county versus state vital records

June 1958 is the state-registration boundary published by Kentucky OVS

Kentucky OVS says central registration of marriages and divorces began in June 1958. For a marriage before that date, contact the county clerk where the license was issued. For a later Kentucky marriage, OVS can search its certificate files using the parties’ names, event date and county.

Before June 1958

Washington County Clerk if the license was issued in Washington County.

June 1958 forward

Washington County Clerk for its license record and/or Kentucky OVS for the state certificate route.

County uncertain

Resolve the Kentucky county of license issuance before assuming Washington County holds the record.

Prepare a search packet before contacting the clerk or OVS

  • ✓
    Both parties’ names

Include maiden/previous names when the official form or clerk instructions call for them.

  • ✓
    Approximate or exact date

The year can be enough for the county copy instructions; OVS asks for month, day and year on its certificate request.

  • ✓
    County of license issuance

This determines which county clerk holds an older/local record and is an OVS request field.

  • ✓
    Type of proof needed

Certified county copy, state certificate, or simply an index lead.

  • ✓
    Requester contact information

Provide the mailing/contact information required by the office receiving the request.
